THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Here is a happy news for all you motorists out there who think that encountering a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) while hurriedly speeding through the busy city roads would be the most unfortunate thing to happen -  the officer would no longer demand the papers of your vehicle on the road and waste your precious time. Not that he has stopped doing his duty, but because he already has your details.Yes, MVIs have just gone digital.Henceforth, the MVIs would carry a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) device, connected to the database server at the Road Transport Office, which, on entering the registration number of the vehicle, would give all updates, including violations such as default in tax remittance and breaching of road rules. No time would be wasted by the officer in going through all papers before finding you guilty or innocent. The officers can also use the PDA device to generate a challan that could be given to the penalised motorists. The PDA devices were distributed to the MVIs on Tuesday by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as part of the computerisation of the Enforcement Wing of the Motor Vehicles Department. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the new cameras of the Road Transport Department installed at different locations in the capital city.Inaugurating the ‘Enforcement Automation’ programme, Chandy said that the computerisation of enforcement would help reduce the complaints of the people regarding the crude methods of enforcement adopted by the authorities till now.The cooperation of the three major departments, Road Transport, Public Works and Police, is necessary to provide better motoring conditions and also to ensure safety on the roads, he said.Chandy also said that everyone is equal before the law and he would even give a sum of Rs 500 from his pocket if anyone catches him violating road rules.Out of the seven cameras inaugurated, three are at Kowdiar and four at Overbridge Junction.Transport Commissioner T P Senkumar said at the function that another set of cameras would be installed in front of the Technopark as the next step. The Department would then implement the system in Ernakulam and Kozhikode districts too.Minister for Transport V S Sivakumar presided over the function.
