KOCHI: The Moksha Dham Crematorium at Elamakkara has been renovated, providing a place for the dead to be cremated in peace. The crematorium, maintained by the Jan-Kalyan Society, was built nearly 12 years ago.“The entire crematorium, including the boundary walls, was renovated using funds to the tune of around `1.5 lakh. The initiative was part of the society’s effort to provide a decent place to cremate the dead and conduct the associated rituals. The work had been going on for over a month and the crematorium is set to begin its operations as before,” said N L Mittal, secretary, Jan-Kalyan Society.“The work included repairing the two furnaces, their chimneys and the shutters. The boundary walls and the gate, which had been in a dilapidated condition, have also been rebuilt. The floor has been tiled. The entire structure was repainted and some electrical rewiring was also done,” said Pradeep Das, the caretaker of the crematorium.“The Moksha Dham also provides the facilities for Hindus to conduct the rituals associated with death. If the priest is not available to give the necessary instructions, we provide them with the required assistance,” he added.According to the society, nearly 40 to 50 bodies are cremated at Moksha Dham every month. The Moksha Dham crematorium is open to all sections of Hindu society and also to those sections which believe in cremating their dead.
