SRIKAKULAM: Following Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) announcement that works at Thermal Power Plant of East Coast Energy Private Limited (ECEPL) at Santabommali area in the district should not be resumed, people of Santabommali and Sompeta mandal in the district are a much relieved lot.
Thousands of fisherfolk and farmers came out on the streets and rushed to Vadditandra village, where a relayhunger strike was launched 440 days ago,to pay tributes to protesters killed in police firing in March this year. "Our thanks to Minister for Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan for taking the right decision for conservation of fragile ecosystem and wetlands," President of Sri Jagannadha Inland Fishermen Association, Kutro told media on Sunday. The relayhunger strike at Vadditandra will continue till GO 1108 is quashed, said leaders.

"Even farmers and fisher folk had lost their livelihood due to ground levelling works of proposed plant area, we are appealing MoEF to quash Environmental Clearance and GO 1108, according to which APIIC had allotted 2,450 acres of wetland to ECEPL," the leaders said.

Responding to the appeal of environmental activists that the proposed land for constucting 2,460 MW thermal power plant in Santabommali mandal is a wet land and a water body and therfore needs to be conserved, MoEF issued orders not to restart the works till further notice.
