PUDUCHERRY: The newly-elected MLAs of the the 13th Legislative Assembly for the Union Territory took oath here on Friday. The ceremony began at 1.05 pm with a two-minute silence being observed by members as an assurance to maintain the decorum of the House during all the sessions in coming days. Thereafter, Pro-tem Speaker T Thiagarajan administered the oath of office to Chief Minister N Rangasamy, followed by former CM V Vaithilingam. As per the schedule drawn up by the Assembly Secretariat, the next to take oath were two former speakers M Chandrakasu of the All India NR Congress (AINRC) and V M C Sivakumar (Independent), followed by former ministers and then MLAs -- all in alphabetical order. In all, 27 MLAs took oath in the Assembly, including 13 AINRC MLAs, seven from Congress, five from AIADMK, one from DMK and one Independent. A M H Nazeem of DMK, who was not present in the Assembly, later took oath as MLA in the office of the pro-tem speaker. Yanam MLA Malladi Krishna Rao took oath in Telugu and the rest in Tamil. One seat is vacant in the 30-member Assembly and in all there are nine first-time MLAs. Earlier, the secretary read out the constitution of the 13th Assembly as well as an order from the L-G appointing Thiagarajan as pro-tem speaker and delegating powers for administering the oath.
