Mumbai: Mumbai could go without milk supply on Sunday as milk farmers of Western Maharashtra are on strike and they are not supplying milk to the Mumbai dairies on Saturday.

They are demanding an increase in the prices. Dairies in Mumbai get 80 per cent of their milk from Western Maharashtra.

The farmers’ organisation, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, has also threatened to block the transport of milk and sugar for four days if their demands are not met. The organisation says the farmers should get a price in accordance with the final market price.

The transport blockade will affect the supply of around 35 to 40 lakh litres of milk, which is collected from various milk cooperatives in Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur. This milk is supplied to various parts of the state, including Mumbai, and the blockade would disrupt these supplies.

The farmers were getting just Rs 12 per litre of milk, which was being sold to the consumers at prices ranging from Rs 18 to Rs 25.

While the blockade on milk supply would be on for four days, the farmers say the blockade on sugar supply would continue indefinitely till they are given the promised amount.
