CHENNAI: Relatives of a 24-year-old auto driver, who died the same day he was released from prison on bail, on Friday alleged police torture and staged a road roko at Moolakadai junction demanding action against police officials. Later, the driver’s mother lodged a complaint with the MKB Nagar police seeking action against the policemen, who allegedly had beaten him up.Police said, Babu (24) of Periyar Nagar, Moolakadai was arrested by MKB Nagar police and remanded on October 11 allegedly in connection with a chain snatching case. He was released on bail on Thursday, the police said. After reaching home, he fell sick and was admitted to Stanley where he later died. But, family members of Babu—the youngest in a family of six siblings— who staged a road roko at Moolakadai junction along with over 100 people for over an hour, alleged that Babu was beaten up by police and demanded action against seven cops from the station. Madhavaram MLA V Murthy assured the protestors of action and dispersed the crowd. Babu’s eldest brother V Durgababu (36) alleged that the auto driver had picked up a fight with two passengers, including a woman he was ferrying, when a chain of the woman passenger fell. “MKB Nagar police picked him up for inquiry near Erukanchery at around 11 pm on October 8. He was innocent but police beat him up and forced him to confess. He was even taken to a private hospital after he fell unconscious in the station and was again brought back and beaten up by seven policemen,” Durgababu alleged. He claimed that Babu told his family of the alleged police torture hours before he died. Relatives alleged that Babu was remanded in judicial custody only after he was beaten up and kept in the police station for three days and that two other crime cases were registered against him. They also alleged that two of their neighbours were also arrested in the same case with Babu.“Police chased us away when we attempted to meet him. The other two men were also beaten up. They were part of the road roko when they vomited blood and were admitted to Stanley,” said Arun Jothy, Babu’s sister. Babu’s mother Tamaraiveni said that he was sent home from the prison in an auto along with the two other neighbours. She claimed that her had wounds on his body and had breathing problems. “We took him to Stanley but they did not give treatment initially when we said he was beaten up by cops. Later, we were told that he died.”
