TUMKUR: The monsoon has again brought suffering for residents of eight villages of Koratagere taluk as there is no bridge to help them cross the big torrent which separates them from district centre. While children have to reach schools by crossing the temporary vulnerable bridge built with areca tree logs by farmers, cattle are forced to swim across.
The remotest villages in coastal Karnataka, which receive an annual rain fall of 3,500 mm do not suffer the problem as they are provided with bridges. But villages of Tumkur district which receive 550 mm annual rain fall, have been suffering since years.'Lack of funds'

To resolve the problem, a bridge between Damagalaiahnapalya and Kalluguttarahalli was sanctioned in 2007 to connect eight villages. But the construction work was stalled at foundation level as contractor Narasimharaju claimed he could not implement the project fully as Rs 10 lakh sanctioned by the ZP was 'spent' in laying foundation.

Contractor Narasimharaju told Express that he had done quality work which the officials could not assess rightly.

Interestingly, the site of the bridge is just 7 km away from Koratagere town which is represented in the assembly by KPCC president G Parameshwara.
