Tamil actress faced 22 cases for making statements that allegedly endorsed pre-marital sex

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday quashed 22 criminal cases filed against actress Khusboo for her statements in magazines allegedly endorsing pre-marital sex.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices Deepak Verma and B S Chauhan allowed the appeal filed by the actress against the decision of the Madras High Court, which had dismissed her plea to quash the cases.

In its ruling the court asked: "When two adults want to live together, what is the offence? Does it amount to an offence? Living together is not an offence. It cannot be an offence."

The cases were registered in various places in Tamil Nadu for her interviews in 2005. "None of the educated people will insist that their bride be a virgin at the time of marriage," she had told a magazine, sparking a furore in the state.

Khusboo on Wednesday told CNN-IBN the Supreme Court's order was her victory. "I have always been a fighter. I was always right. I have not lost anything," she said.

"I am feeling great, it has been a lovely morning waking up with the realisation and hearing that all the cases have been quashed. There were demonstrations outside my house and it was diffucult then because it was a house arrest for my children," she said.

"I knew that whatever I said in the magazine was absolutely right," she said.
