Mumbai: Director Shekhar Kapur has decided to make a film based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet but with a twist, it will be set in times of acute water shortages.
Kapur, director of Oscar-nominated Elizabeth, told DNA newspaper that his take on the Shakespeare classic would be relevant to contemporary viewers because water shortage is on the rise all over the world.
But he didn't reveal any details about how he would work the theme of water shortages into Romeo and Juliet.
Kapur said he tentatively plans to call the movie Paani.
It wasn't clear if the story would be set in the present day or the future, or whether the movie would be in English or Hindi.
"It's a very relevant film for today's times," said Kapur. "It is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet but in times where there would be a huge scarcity of water."
