KARWAR: Kaiga will be the hub of nuclear power generation soon. The nuclear power station at Kaiga will have two more reactor units, each of generating capacity of 700 MW each. According to sources, the central government has agreed in principle to the establishment of these units three days back. Presently, there are four units at Kaiga with generating capacity of 235 MW each. With the establishment of two more units, the generating capacity of Kaiga station would become 2340 MW.Earlier, the gestation period for erecting a reactor unit used to be 9-10 years. With better expertise the NPCIL has in building pressurised heavy water reactors, this has been reduced to five years, it is pointed out. However the detailed time-frame for bringing the units in operation has not been revealed yet.Water availability at Kaiga would permit only new large units. The construction of the two units is part of NPCIL’s programme to build 18 such units in the country over the next decade. Already four such units - two each in Kakrapar, Gujarat, and Ravatbhata, Rajasthan - are under construction.
