BARIPADA: An elephant calf was found dead in Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district on Friday. The carcass of the two-year-old elephant was spotted in Patabil section under Barhakamuda range. The forest officials suspect that the elephant calf had died of poisoning three days back. The carcass has been sent to Jashipur veterinary hospital for autopsy and its body parts to forensic laboratory in Bhubaneswar for testing, said Regional Conservator of Forests (RCF) and Field Director of STR Anup Nayak. Denying poaching, he said, the cause of the death would be ascertained after post mortem.Blood stains were spotted at Uppar Barhakamuda forest range inside the forest a couple of days back which the forest officials believe are that of a injured adult male elephant. A search is on to locate the injured pachyderm.
