Students of Jadavpur University were harassed for suspected links with Naxalites.

Kolkata: Students of Jadavpur University have hit the streets in protest because some of them say they were harassed for suspected links with Naxalites.

This is after police raided a house near the university where five of their colleagues run a woman's organisation. The organisation Matangini Mahila Samity works against land acquisition in Nandigram, Singur and other places in the state.

"A team of police personnel arrived at 11:30 and wanted to search our room saying that we have Maoist connections. But they could not show us any search warrant. That is how it all began,” says complainant, Jayeeta Das.

The students allege it is a conspiracy by local CPM activists. Police on the other hand say they have found some incriminating documents.

"We were given information that there were some activities going on and if the police wants to investigate matters, they can. How can we arrest just anyone like that,” says Assistant SP, Jadavpur, Zayed Rahman.

The girls allege the police gave lame excuses when they tried to lodge an FIR. The teachers at the University too feel that the police were clearly flouting the law.

Meanwhile, as details about the incident begin to be revealed, the incident is likely to gain strong student support in the days to come.
