CHENNAI: Celebrating this Deepavali would be a different experience for 1,400 children at Udhavum Ullangal. On a weekend, close to 40 volunteers from various IT companies came together to host a successful event, says Shankar Mahadevan, founding trustee of Udhavum Ullangal.A day-long festival packed with high dose entertainment came to reality with various sponsors contributing through CSR programmes. Uplift of children from the bottom of society is the need of the hour and thus we started to raise fund for their education, Mahadevan said. People from all walks of life are donating money to be spent on their education.Being a single day event, the organisers’ main aim was to see the smile on every child’s face and see them leaving the premises with a sense of joy. On the eve of Deepavali 1,414 children hailing from various homes are distributed dresses. What started as an unplanned event by a bunch of like-minded people became a yearly event, says SVG Subramanian, trustee member.
