New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Tuesday told the two JNU students, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya that they must surrender before the police but agreed to listen to their plea for security.
Umar's lawyer reportedly told the court that both wanted to surrender, but at a 'requested place and time' out of fear of threat to their lives.
The matter was shared by Umar's lawyer with a DCP who was present at the hearing. After going through the request letter (containing place and time of surrender), the DCP objected to the location.
The High Court, while going through the pleas, decided to hear the petitions of the students along with the plea of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail on Wednesday.
Umar along with 4 others – who have been booked for sedition by the Delhi Police for allegedly raising anti-India slogans during an Afzal Guru event - resurfaced at the JNU campus on Sunday night and slammed the central government for 'gagging the voice of students'.
It was learnt that all the five students decided to reappear in the campus to participate in a protest march demanding justice for Hyderabad University research scholar Rohith Vemula and Kanhaiya Kumar.
On Tuesday, they moved the Delhi High Court seeking protection before they surrender in order to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi made a U-turn from his earlier stand of not opposing JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea in the High Court.
"Earlier the circumstances were different but now it is different," he said while hinting that the Delhi Police will oppose Kanhaiya's bail – if granted by the court.
SQR Ilyas, Umar's father said, "I am worried about my son's safety. I would like him to surrender in the court to avoid police torture. The charges against him and other friends are more heinous than the ones against Kanhaiya. Even if he cleared of all the charges, Umar will have to battle this entire life."
