BANGALORE: VTL Communications claims to have invented the world’s first ever technology that can convert 2D to 3D without having to buy a 3D television. The invention called ‘3D IMAJIG’ is said to be able to convert any two dimension content from any electronic source to three dimensional by using just a set top box.The mastermind of the creation, N G Lokanatha Singh, an ayurvedic practitioner by profession, possessing an extraordinary interest in the field of electronics, has shocked people by his invention. When City Express spoke to him about the project he said, “I grew up poor.My father was a government officer. I practice ayurveda but electronics has been my love. A few years ago I started reading about three dimensional objects. My cobrother lives in the USA and has worked at the Reserve Bank security department there. All our parts were bought from either Taiwan or China. As labour is cheaper in India we started working with about 20 talented employees and you see the end result. After constituting the hardware, we struggled with the software. My intention always has been to serve the people and I think I have done my part today.” He also informed us that they were applying for a patent in India and they had already been granted a US patent in the name of his co-brother.The invention, if it can do what the creators are saying it can do, can be pathbreaking in the world of 3D TVs. What it means to the ordinary people is voiced by B S Geetha, a customer, who says, “Selling a 2D TV to buy a 3D TV is becoming a trend nowadays. 3D TVs are expensive and are tailor-made in a way where we can watch only 3D programmes. If the software they have created can convert all programs into 3D and in HD quality, it will be a breakthrough.” The set top box is accompanied by a pair of anaglyph glasses which facilitate the 3D viewing. Yatindra, a dealer with SONY said, “It would definitely be competition for 3D television manufacturers such as SONY, Toshiba and Panasonic. But I do not think it will match the quality of three dimension produced by these TVs.”
