CHENNAI: The Department of Posts on Sunday held the annual ‘Universal Postal Union (UPU) letter writing competition’ for students below 15 years here at the CD Nayagam T Nagar Higher Secondary School. Five hundred and fifty students participated in the 41st UPU competition. Participants were asked to write a letter to an athlete or a sports personality on what the Olympic Games meant to them. Students were given the option of writing in English or in their mother tongue.Officials told City Express that the scripts would be sent to evaluators soon. “Best three entries from each postal circle will be forwarded to the postal directorate. Also, three best entries in Tamil will also be forwarded,” an official said.Prizes range from `250 (consolation) to `2,000 (first prize) and the best entry at the national level would qualify as the official Indian entry for the international level competition.The Universal Postal Union would select the international award winning entries. The top three entries would be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals along with a certificate and an album of UPU official postage stamps.
