Chennai: India is looking to localise up to 45 per cent of work in the third and fourth units of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant after working closely with Russian experts in the first two units, a senior official said on Tuesday.
"It is a repeat of Kudankulam 1 and 2. What is required this time is that how much work we can do in India. So where do you partition the work between them and us? We wanted to do maximum work in India this time for Kudankulam 3 and 4. The localisation will be between 40 and 45 percent," Shiv Abhilash Bhardwaj, Director (Technical), NPCIL said.
He said the nuclear equipment, turbo generator and turbo generator would come from Russia. All that is called balance of plant will be by India. Which means from sea water pumping, electrical system, ventilation air conditioning, control systems, many of such things will be done by India."
Bhardwaj said that after working on the first the two units at KKNPP, they could understand the equipment and that "we can do most things in India."
However, NPCIL's aspiration will only help it to make "some savings," he said.
Bhardwaj said the difficulty is that Russian credit is available at low interest rates and when NPCIL does it may do so at a visibly less cost.
"But we take loan from the banking system and the interest rate in the country is increasing, inflation is high. Right now if I want to work out what will happen in the next 10 years, I will assume the current interest rates and current inflation rates," he said.
"So in terms of money, I will not save much. But I am getting the technology. And the money is remaining within the country. So, there could be some savings," he said.
Asked when unit 1 at KNPP will be commissioned, he said it would be after the conduct of safety drill as stipulated by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
