I am responsibe for war in Iraq: Bush
Bush accepted responsibility for launching Iraq war based on flawed intelligence, but insisted removing Saddam Hussein was right.

New Delhi: US President George W Bush on Wednesday admitted his decision to go to war in Iraq was based on "wrong intelligence."

Claiming responsiblity for the decision to go into Iraq, Bush said would fix what went wrong "by reforming intelligence capabilities."

He made the announcement in a speech at the Woodrow Wilson Centre, hours before Iraq went for the historic parliamentary elections.

But he reiterated that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was a "threat" to Iraq and his decision to remove Saddam Hussein from Iraq's political canvas was a right one.

His taking personal responsibility for the intelligence bungling did not mean that Bush offered an apology for going to war in Iraq.

Nor did it mean any precise plan for a withdrawal from the country in the near future. Instead, Bush emphasised victory must be ensured and certain objectives met.

"Saddam was a threat - and the American people and the world is better off because he is no longer in power," the President said, insisting on a theme that he has dwelt several times in the past.

Bush is under increasing pressure on the Iraq issue. Polls suggest most Americans are unhappy with his handling of the war and some lawmakers are questioning how long American troops would stay in that country.
