Thrissur: From writing to burying bodies, it is a transition that very few writers will make. But journalist Rameshan Korappath is an exception.

He has worked in several Malayalam dailies but what sets him apart is not his love for writing but his other job, that, of an undertaker.

“I didn’t take it not as a job. Every one takes the dead body to the cemetery. Unknowingly it turned out to be my job. Now-a-days a contract is given for any job. So, cremation is also done as a contract. I also provide a number of employment opportunities for others,” says Rameshan.

Rameshan has studied the funeral rites practiced by different religions in India. He has also studied the scriptures before becoming an undertaker.

He says he wants to establish an institution to teach funeral rites scientifically to those who wish to learn it.

“Rituals should be brought to a framework. The real meaning of rituals should be imparted to the public by establishing an institution,” he adds.

Rameshan says he never tires of performing his duties as an undertaker even when he has had to perform the last rites of loved ones.
