Head gear sale leaves roads dirty

With police cracking down on two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets, many are resorting to instant purchases from street vendors to avoid fines. The riders then unpack the helmets and litter the area with the plastic packing material. This has left arterial roads in the city strewn with plastic wastes. Around 300 to 500 temporary shops have come up in the city. They sell around 250 to 300 helmets per day. “Buyers unpack the new helmets and discard the packing material on the road. How can we expect them to be responsible?” asks Venkatesan, a helmet seller.

Vellore Corporation Commissioner Seeni Ajmal Khan said, “I have asked the sanitary inspectors to instruct shop keepers to collect the plastic covers immediately after selling helmets and throw it in the dustbins.”
