THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI legislative party leader C Divakaran alleged that the UDF Government was not lifting 78537 tonnes of foodgrains allotted by the Centre. He told a mediapersons here on Monday that the government was doing nothing to check price rise during the Onam-Ramzan festival season. Divakaran said that in January, 2011, Centre had allotted 35,948.17 metric tonnes of rice . During the same period 42,589.02 MT of wheat was also sanctioned. But the State Government did not take any effort to lift the foodgrains so far. The State Government had also not even asked the Centre to review the decision to curtail the kerosene quota. Fishermen and farmers in the state were facing difficulty following the cut in kerosene quota. “The LDF Government had prepared a scheme worth Rs 337 crore to provide 13 essential items at half the price and approached the Cenetre seeking assistance. Citing that it was the State Government’s responsibility to check prices, the Centre said it had no funds to provide for checking prices,” he said. Following this, the LDF Government had allocated Rs 100 crore in the budget. For urgent implementation, Rs 20 crore was sanctioned from the supplementary grant. Divakaran said that the UDF Government was sabotaging the scheme introduced by the LDF Government. During his tenure, Rs 75 crore was allotted for Supplyco’s market intervention, Divakaran said. He said that the LDF Government had allocated Rs 25 crore for kerosene subsidy. Moreover during the LDF tenure, lakhs of people received Onam kits free of cost. He warned that if the government did not initiate steps for market intervention the state would face severe crisis in the days to come.
