MANDYA: The two-day Jalapathotsava, the festival of falls, that attracts thousands of tourists to the region, at the Gaganachukki falls, will be celebrated as ‘Gaganachukki-Bharachukki‘ utsav from next year. The event will be organised by both Mandya and Chamrajanagar district at the Bharachukki falls in Kollegal taluk.Around two lakh tourists from Kerala, Mysore, Mandya and Chamrajanagar district turned up for a glimpse of the illuminated falls last year during the Jalapathotsav. Chamrajanagar MP R Druvanarayan said that the Union government has planned a mega project in the tourism circuit, covering Mysore, Mandya and Chamrajanagar district. He said that `100 crore will be sanctioned to improve tourism in Bharachukki-Gaganachukki, Melukote, B R Hills, M M Hills and other tourist spots in the region. Karnataka Government, Prinicipal Secretary M K Shankerlinge Gowda said that the government is keen to organise ‘Bharachukki- Gaganachukki’ utsav. He said that the government would extend all support towards the festival of falls.Kannada and Culture Department, Secretary Basaravaj said that there is need for more programmes like Jalapathotsava to promote tourism in the region. Former minister and MLA P M Narendraswamy said that the Union government should give its approval for the proposal of development of Gaganachukki. He said that the government should boost tourism to create both direct and indirect employment.The cultural programmes and light music by Kikkeri Krishnamurthy, Folk songs by Pichahalli Srinivas, Appagere Thimmaraju, Junny, Jugalbandi Stephen and drummer Deva and others enthralled large gathering on the banks of the Cauvery.Legislators C S Puttaraju, D S Veeraiah, DC P C Jaffar and others were present.
