UDUPI: State Religious Council (Rajya Dharmika Parishat) has come into existence with Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa signing the document making way for its formation, said Higher Education and Udupi District Minister VS Acharya.
After inaugurating the newlyconstructed Patrika Bhavan at Nairkere, Ajjarkad, on Sunday, he told reporters that though the Common Religious Endowment Act had come into force in 2003, a few of its sections had been challenged in the Supreme Court, questioning the government's authority to make nominations in the Temple Administrative Committee. "As per the SC directions, the Karnataka Religious and Charitable Institutions Act was amended and had been sent to the Governor for his assent. The government has also been asked to form Religious Council and Chief Minister Yedyyurappa on Friday signed the documents," he added.

The eightmember council will comprise dharmadarshis of different temples, Minister for Religious Endowment and the government secretary, he said, adding the Council will have powers to appoint the administrative body to all statelevel temples coming under the government.
