HYDERABAD: The Kiran Kumar Reddy government, though keen on withdrawing cases registered against Telangana students and youth for their role in the violence that was unleashed during the movement for separate state in 2009 and in the two years thereafter, is treading cautiously to avoid any legal complications.After handling the Sakala Janula Samme, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy took up withdrawal of all the police cases against students and directed the respective departments to clear the legal hurdles, if any.After a thorough exercise, the home and law departments shortlisted 1,645 cases from about 8,000 registered against agitators, and divided them into five categories.Recently, the government has issued a GO withdrawing 709 cases involving nearly 4,500 activists.It is in the process of withdrawing another 98 cases in which nearly 2,000 activists figure.A Congress leader from Telangana said the home and law departments were preparing case-by-case reports to avoid legal challenges in the courts."The chief minister will personally monitor the cases of serious offences.Several ministers hope that he will decide to withdraw the cases," another leader said.With the state government opening the floodgates of employment and issuing notifications for recruitment, pressure has been mounting on the government from MPs, MLAs and other public representatives belonging to all parties, and the TJAC for withdrawal of all cases against students.Home minister Sabita Indra Reddy has even given a written assurance to the Congress MPs that cases will ve dropped.A minister said that only a few students were facing police cases and would be able to secure jobs anywhere in the country if the cases were withdrawn.
