New Delhi: March 20 marks the arrival of the spring season in the northern hemisphere. This date is also referred to as the vernal or spring equinox in the northern hemisphere and the fall or autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere.
Google has put up its 2012 spring equinox doodle on its home pages in European and North American countries and not on home pages of countries such as India that traditionally mark the arrival of spring on other dates.
While it is generally said that on an equinox the day and the night are of equal length but it may not hold true for all locations on earth. An equinox occurs two times in a year when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator.
The Google spring equinox doodle has been designed by Marimekko, a Finnish textile and clothing design company founded in 1951. This change of season Google doodle is a result of a creative collaboration by eight Finnish designers: Maija Isola, Kristina Isola, Erja Hirvi, Maija Louekari, Aino-Maija Metsola, Teresa Moorhouse, Jenni Tuominen and Katsuji Wakisaka.
The idea of coming up with a Marimekko designed Google doodle came when Marissa Mayer, vice president at Google, visited Marimekko's textile printing factory in Helsinki.
The spring equinox Google doodle has a school-kid playfulness feel about it and includes flowers, a stork, a loaded truck, butterflies and a zebra.
