MYSORE: It was a memorable moment for Reshma, daughter of a pourakarmika, who had been separated from her parents for the last five years. She broke down immediately after seeing her mother Shankaramma at the Child Home premises on Lalitha Mahal Road.The Children Welfare Committee (CWC) headed by N T Venkatesh had been nursing her for the past five years by providing her with food, shelter and education. After making a series of efforts to trace her parents, CWC were finally able to identify them.Reshma was handed over to her mother, who is a pourakarmika in Pandavapura Town Municipal Corporation in Mandya Distict. Her husband Chaluva passed away three months ago, leaving behind three children for her to take care.Unhappy over the harassment by her alcoholic father, Reshma alias Sukanya left her home in Pandavapura with her cousin and went to Mysore, when she was nine years old.When she returned to Pandavapura from Metagalli in Mysore after spending few days at a relatives house, she remembered how her father had harassed her mother. Not wanting to return home she took a train to Bangalore. When she was unable to find work as a maid servant, she returned to Mysore and stood alone on the platform, five years ago.Members of Ashodaya Mahila Samanvaya Samiti who noticed her, rescued and sent her to Bapuji Children’s Home. Later, she was shifted to ‘Balamandir’. The CWC admitted her to a nearby school and she is currently in the 7th standard, Reshma explained to media persons on Friday.The CWC team led by Chairman Venkatesh and members Nalini, Yashoda, Srinivas Raj Urs, Parashuram, Balamandir Superintendent Geethalakshmi and Probation Officer Nagamma handed over the girl to her mother under Section 39(3) of the Juvenile Justice Act.
