Gandhi's grandson cremated
Ramchandra Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on June 13, in the presence of his family and friends.

New Delhi: Ramchandra Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on June 13, in the presence of his close family and friends.

The 70-year old was cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium after he was found dead in his room at the India International Centre (IIC), an the elite club in South Delhi.

His daughter Leela Gandhi performed the last rites. His wife Indu and his daughter survive him. Ramchandra was the son of Devdas Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s youngest son.

His two brothers Rajmohan and Gopal Krishna, sister Tara Gandhi Bhattacharya and niece Amrita along with other close family were present at the funeral.

Noted historians like Romila Thapar and Kapila Vatsyayan, actress Nandita Das, painter Jatin Das, journalist Mark Tully, noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande and Prime Minister's media advisor Sanjaya Baru were present at the funeral.

He had checked in to the hotel on June 10 to escape the grueling heat. Police termed his death as natural.

Tara recalled that he had told her just last week that he wanted to make at least one child happy a day.

"It will be a long time before we fully realise the impact of this loss. He was such a genuine person," she said.
