KOCHI: For a compulsive non-veg who cannot imagine a menu without chicken, then it is time to think twice. The price of chicken on Tuesday reached an all-time high with shops selling fresh chicken for nothing less than Rs 108 a kilogram. “With the summer season on, the chicks brought to Kerala hardly survive the heat. Hence, the number of hens available has come down drastically, forcing us to increase the price of chicken from this month,” said Kumar who sells chicken in the city. Also, the rates are not expected to come down till the rainy season ends, say some chicken vendors. “With the rainy season, it will be extremely difficult to grow hens for fear of an outbreak of diseases. Hence, we will be forced to fix high rates for the chickens that are being sold,” he said. But chicken vendors agree that how much ever the rate of chicken go up, it will not be as high as the hike that has come up with vegetables.Last week, the price of chicken in the market stood at between Rs 70 and Rs 80. On Monday, the price was tagged at Rs 103. Meanwhile, the seer fish which was available at Rs 450 a kilo last month has shot up to Rs 700 a kilo this week.
