Former South African president Phumzile Mlambo has taken over as new executive director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in the presence of UN Chief Ban Ki-Moon, who appointed her on July 10.
Mlambo appointment covers the post left vacant in the wake of resignation by former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, current presidential candidate for the elections in November 2013. The South African leader, who took the new charge on Tuesday, was also vice president in 2005-2008 under Thabo Mbeki, and previously she was Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister of Mining and Energy, and Culture, Science and Technology.
She also held positions linked to women affairs, including the leadership of the Women Organisation in Natal province, in South Africa. UN-Women goals include providing technical and financial support to countries and intergovernmental bodies for their plans and policies oriented to women development.
