BHUBANESWAR: Most young guns with a B Tech degree, or for that matter an M Tech from a famous engineering college, would take up a job with an MNC or join the government and help build the nation. Satya Panigrahy and Debashis Das allegedly decided to steal scrap and be millionaires overnight. And what did the two do? They allegedly stole pipelines, weighing a tonne each, from Chandaka Industrial Estate and sold them as scrap in West Bengal market. When Commissionerate Police arrested them, it seized 12 pieces of pipes, their value running into lakhs of rupees. Satya has a B Tech degree from Burla Engineering College, while Debashis is an M Tech from Naini University in Allahabad. They teamed up and brought on board a contractor - Abani Mohapatra - and a scrap dealer - Himansu Beura - for their business which needed smart logistics. Infocity Police had information about water pipes, each weighing a tonne and costing ` 1 lakh, disappearing from Chandaka Industrial Estate. A special squad kept tab and stumbled upon the team which hired trailers (18-wheeled heavy vehicles) to transport the stolen goods. “They would offer the trailer operators triple the normal cost and demand that the pipes be shifted on urgent basis. The two also made similar deals with crane operators to facilitate the jobs,” Bhubaneswar DCP Nitinjit Singh said. The two were well aware of the way check gates functioned in the State and would manage to make their way through till Balasore where another transporter would take the consignment to Kolkata. The scrap was sold in Kolkata market at hefty price. Police said the two managed to operate mostly in the night and once out of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack limits, their job got easy. Credentials of the four revealed that Debashis and Himansu were arrested last year by Laxmi Sagar Police in connection with such thefts. The four were produced in a local court on Wednesday.
