SALEM : Former PMK MLA of Kabilar Malai constituency, K Nedunchelian, was arrested on Friday for allegedly transferring a Rs 1-crore worth land belonging to the Mahatma Gandhi Trust to his name by fraudulent means.Nedunchelian, who represented the Kabilar Malai constituency during 2006-2011, was the then deputy general secretary of the PMK. He quit the party after the last Assembly elections.According to police, Nedunchelian transferred a one-acre land belonging to the Mahatma Gandhi Trust to his name. The land located at Nanjai Idayar village in P Velur is said to be worth Rs 1 crore. The trust was founded in 1950. None of the 17 trustees are alive at present and the Trust is defunct. Hence, there are no claimants for the land, according to police.Using his clout, Nedunchelian is alleged to have transferred the property to his name, with the backing of Ponni Mani alias Subramani, the former chairman of Paramathy Velur Town Panchayat.The transfer is said to have taken place before he was elected MLA.The matter was brought to light by N Mathyalagan, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Makkal Urimai Iyakkam, in 2008.Mathyalagan made representations with the DIG Salem Range and also the Namakkal District Administration. However, no action was initiated on the complaint.The issue was reviewed by the special cell for land grab cases after a fresh complaint was submitted by Mathialagan on July 25. After a through verification of primary documents pertaining to the property, a case was booked against Nedunchelian, Ponni Mani, and advocate Kamaraj, an associate of Nedunchelian.After being taken to the Special Cell at the District Police Office in Namakkal, the three were produced before the JM court in Paramathy Vellore. They were subsequently lodged in the Salem Central Prison.
