HYDERABAD: Scores of girl students at the English and Foreign Languages University gathered in front of the administrative block on Friday and shouted slogans against professor Suchetra, warden of the Mahlaqa Bai Chanda Hostel, demanding her resignation. They alleged that Prof Suchetra has been harassing students living in the hostels by imposing strict rules and regulations.“There have been certain developments within the women’s hostels we are concerned about. New rules and regulations were imposed on hostelers without any consultation with the students.Visiting hours were truncated by one hour without any prior communication. This is a complete lack of transparency,” a newly-joined student said. Another student complained that when they protested against the warden, she came and warned us about cancelling our hostel admission. “Not only she humiliated us with her words and gestures but also scoffed at our genuine concerns,” fumed another student. The cause for the agitations have come about after authorities at the English and Foreign Languages University have brought in new regulations this academic year, with regard to staying in the campus hostels. They are apparently taking a signed undertaking from students which lists certain rules like not raising objections to room allotments, not posting any notices anywhere in the hostel premises without the permission of hostel authorities and accepting all decisions implemented by authorities from time to time.Irate students submitted a three-page representation to M Veda Sarvan, dean of hostels demanding resignation of the warden. They also met in-charge vice-chancellor Prof Amrita Vally and registrar Prof T Nageswara Rao.“With university authorities failing to take action against the warden, we convened a meeting with all students and decided to intensify the protest from Saturday. We will continue our protests until the warden tenders her resignation,” an MPhil student said.
