TRIPUNITHURA: A Carnatic vocal concert usually follows a conventional style where maestros pick a major raga for the narration and also to present a notable ‘Kirthan’ to explore the mood of the raga. In between the elaborate narration of the composition, the accompanying artistes showcase their brilliancy in their respective percussion instruments.Going against the conventional style, mridangam maestro Padma Bhushan Umayalpuram K Sivaraman presented two ‘Thaniyavarthanams’ at the vocal concert by the upcoming singer Bharath Sundar. The concert started with the ‘Thodi varnam’ followed by the popular opening composition ‘Vaathaapi’ in raga Hamsadhwani. After conventionally following the significant features of the concert, the singer entered the main raga Kalyani. Edappally Ajithkumar’s violin enriched the tonal beauty of raga Kalyani. At this point, the mridangam maestro presented a tuneful ‘Thaniyavarthanam’ with Perunkavu P L Sudheer on the ghatam. After presenting another composition in the raga Salaga Bhairavi, the singer again entered the second climax by presenting the ‘Ragam Thanam Pallavi’ in the raga Saaveri. Umayalpuram played the mridangam during the narration of ‘Thaanam’ which is very rare. The mridangam maestro presented the ‘Thaniyavarthanam’ in an entirely different thaal. Umayalpuram recalled the heydays when stalwarts like Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar allowed young Sivaraman to accompany them. “Now it is my turn to bring up the young singers to the world of fame by accompanying them in tune with their ‘sampradaayam’ of singing,” said Umayalpuram.
