DMK to go it alone for civic polls

CHENNAI: Announcing that the party finds no need to form an alliance for the upcoming local body elections, DMK chief M Karunanidhi, in a statement released late on Wednesday night, said the party has decided to go it alone this time.Justifying his party’s decision to face the polls alone, Karunanidhi said, “We had fought the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections on the basis of a shared ideology of setting up a secular and people-friendly government both at the State and Centre. But the civic polls require no ideological partners, as it is about serving the people at close proximity. On this basis, the DMK has decided that there is no need to form alliances for the local body elections.”However, his statement loosely hinted that the DMK-Congress alliance at the Centre and in the Tamil Nadu Assembly would continue.
