Thousands of devotees from Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand on Sunday threw apples, pears and flowers at each other as they celebrated traditional 'Bagwal' festival at Devidhura in Champawat district.

"We had arranged 10 quintals of pear and apple fruits and four basket full of flowers for the purpose to be used by devotees of four traditional clans of Gaharwal, Chamyal, Lamgaria and Balig," Devidhura fair magistrate Ashok joshi said.

Earlier, the devotees used to throw stones at each other in 'Bagwal' to please their clan deity 'Varahi Devi', that has been converted as "fruits war" following the Uttarakhand High Court's order from last year, Joshi said.

"'Bagwal' began at 2 pm and ran for the next 20 minutes and played with pear and apple fruits under strict security measures against using stones," he said.

The Devidhura fair was inaugurated by Speaker of the state Assembly Govind Singh Kunjwal yesterday and concluded today.
