Dolce and Gabbana have been sentenced to 18 months of jail term on charges of tax evasion.

New Delhi: Fashion designer duo Dolce and Gabbana have been sentenced to 18 months of jail on charges of hiding hundreds of millions of euros from Italian tax authorities.

Fashion designer Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana initially had been sentenced to 20 months of jail term which was later reduced by two months.

A lawyer for Dolce and Gabbana, who have denied any wrongdoing, said they would appeal the decision.

The case stems from an investigation that began in 2008 when authorities stepped up their fight against tax evasion during the economic recession that almost the entire world faced.

Fashion companies have fallen under the scrutiny of Italy's tax authorities because the sector has done well in spite of the financial crisis. Giorgio Armani had to pay 270 million euros to tax authorities in early April to settle a dispute over payments from the group's subsidiaries abroad.
