KOCHI: The dismantling of the second motor bay of the North rail overbridge (RoB) will begin on Monday. Along with the dismantling of the second motor bay located on the right side of the bridge (from Kaloor), the authorities are planning to start the construction of the new bridge on the other side.“The demolition of the second motor bay will begin on Monday. Along with that, we are also planning to start the construction work of the new bridge on the other side,” Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) managing director Tom Jose said.Meanwhile the demolition of the first motor bay has reached its last stage. Now, only a small portion in the centre part of the old motor bay remains and the authorities said the entire bay would be completely dismantled before Monday.Once dismantled, both the motor bays will be reconstructed as two-lane tracks which will be opened for heavy vehicles. After remodeling both the motor bays to two-lane tracks, the main bridge will be demolished and two additional lanes will be added to the main bridge. The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is planning to complete the reconstruction of both the bays within six months.The North RoB is being reconstructed as part of the proposed Metro rail project. This is the second major Metro Rail-related project that was initiated this year.The work of two major stretches through which the traffic will be diverted when the second bay is dismantled- the stretch between Rajaji Road and Pachalam railway gate and that between Pachalam Railway gate and Chakayathu Road - are also progressing. The repair work is being done under the aegis of the Kochi Metro Rail Corporation.Though there was initial apprehension on the timely completion of the work, the authorities are of the opinion that the work will be completed within the stipulated 18 months. The recently held review meeting also expressed satisfaction about the progress in work so far.
