Demand for small states rises, protesters call for blockades in Assam
The National Democratic Front of Bodoland and All Bodo Students' Union has called a 100-hour national highway blockade.

Guwahati: A series of protests have been organised in the North East in the wake of the announcement for a new statehood for Telangana on Friday. Protesters in Assam are planning on blocking several crucial roads and railways in a bid to cut off the entire North Eastern region from the rest of the country.

The National Democratic Front of Bodoland and All Bodo Students' Union has called a 100-hour national highway blockade.

The Telangana decision has given rise to demands for smaller states in Assam, Different organisations have come forth with the demand for four separate states, a state for the Bodos, one for the Karbis, one for the Dimasas and one for the Koch Rajbongshis.

"Bodoland demand is a very ancient, very genuine and many decades old demand. It is very much justified, legitimate and democratic right of the Bodo people of Assam," Bodoland People's Front MP SK Bwiswmuthiary had said.

Reacting to the violence in the North East by statehood supporters, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had earlier offered that the doors of the government were open for talks to solve their problems.

If the protesters want to resolve their issues, they could come for discussions on their problems with the government. Gogoi had warned that the government will not tolerate those who take the law into their hands.
