Delhi court grants bail to SAR Geelani in a sedition case

New Delhi: Former Delhi University professor SAR Geelani, who was arrested under sedition charges in connection with a Press Club event, has been granted bail by a Delhi Court on Saturday.

Geelani, who holds a doctorate in Arabic, has been questioning Afzal Guru's hanging ever since Delhi Police accused him of being involved in the 2001 Parliament attack and failed to win a conviction.

At the Press Club event, a group had allegedly shouted slogans hailing Guru, following which the police had lodged a case under sections 124A (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC against Geelani and other unnamed persons.

The police had claimed to have registered the FIR taking suo motu cognisance of media clips of the incident.
