New Delhi: Two days after Genpact India’s assistant vice-president Swaroop Raj committed suicide at his Noida residence, his wife lodged an FIR of abetment of suicide with the police, blaming the company and seven of its employees for his death.
Raj, 35, who was facing allegations of sexual harassment at workplace, committed suicide on Tuesday. His 29-year-old wife Kirti, a management trainee in the same organisation, has named Genpact India, five male workers and two female workers who had levelled the harassment charges, in the FIR.
"The suicide note and the suspension letter make it clear that Swaroop was driven to take his life because of the abrupt action taken against him by the perpetrators of crime (name of the senior employees of the company)," reads the police complaint filed by Kirti.
The company had asked Raj to submit his identity card and laptop till the completion of the enquiry. Kirti’s complaint states that her husband was suspended without any investigation. "He was declared guilty without being given any opportunities to be heard and (they) penalised him by barring him from coming to work; he was not allowed to work from home and made to leave behind his identity card and laptop, thereby brandished as a sexual offender and stripped off his dignity without any investigation."
Police said they will look into the matter and, if required, will call the people named in the FIR for questioning. "He was removed from the company on the allegations of sexual harassment at workplace," said a senior police officer.
The employees named in the FIR are assistant vice president HR Sachin Khanna, assistant vice president Sujoy Ghosh, chief executive officer NV Tiger Tyagrajan, chief human resource officer Piyush Mehta, global operating officer Darren Soumur and two female employees.
On December 18, Kirti broke open the main door of her house after repeated calls went unanswered and found her husband hanging from a ceiling fan. A suicide note and the suspension letter issued by the organisation were recovered from the spot.
The suicide note, which Raj had written for his wife, said he would not be able to face the world as “everyone will look at me with that eye even if I come clean”.
“I want to let you know how much I love you. I have an allegation by two of the employees on sexual harassment and trust me I didn’t do anything. I know the world will understand it but you and our families should trust me. The allegations are baseless. But the entire Genpact will know about it. Hence, I don’t have the courage to face everyone. I want you to be strong and live your life with whole respect as your husband has not done anything. I am going as everyone will look at me with that eye even if I come clean,” the letter read.
Raj joined Genpact in 2007 as a process developer. He was made senior manager in 2015 and was gradually promoted to the post of assistant vice president. He had done his MBA from Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation University in Ghaziabad.
