MADURAI: Selvaraj(24), a Dalit youth of Bharathipuram in Dindigul district was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai with a broken wrist that he suffered at the hands of a group of caste Hindus from his village.
In a complaint lodged with the south Dindigul police, Selvaraj said that there were temples of deities, Kaliamman, Bagawathi Amman and Mariamman in Bharathipuram. The festival of these temples was celebrated on May 19 and during the celebrations, the deities were carried aloft along the streets of the village to every house. It was a practice for the people in the houses to pour saffron water on those who carried the deities.

On the night of May 19, the deities were brought to the house of Selvaraj. During this time, under the influence of alcohol, some caste Hindus from Mettupati had ridiculed and abused him.

The next day, the five men, including Sadayan, Das and Ramesh came to the Dalit colony and requested Selvaraj not to lodge a complaint. He and his friends insisted that the men apologise for their behaviour the previous day, which they duly did.

The gang, which was armed with weapons, attacked Selvaraj, injured him on the head and broke his right wrist.

He was admitted to the Dindigul hospital and on the same night, shifted to the GRH in Madurai.

A Kadir, director of Evidence, a Madurai based NGO which took up the case said that the youth had been assaulted only because he had asked the majority community men to apologise for insulting him.
