Custodial torture: SHRC awards Rs 50,000 as compensation

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Sunday awarded Rs 50,000 as compensation to a man who was allegedly beaten up in police custody.

The commission also recommended action against the then Assistant Commissioner of Police and the Sub Inspector of Nadakkavu holding them responsible for the incident. Commission member K E Gangadharan issued the order on a complaint filed by Rajesh of Merikkunnu, Kozhikode.

Rajesh’s brother had been in love with a girl from another caste and had registered their marriage. Following this, the girl’s family had lodged a complaint. On August 6, 2008, the couple and the boy’s relatives were summoned to the police station. Rajesh was beaten up and warned not to inform to the magistrate about the beating incident. But he refused to obey.

The Magistrate took Rajesh’s statement and ordered a medical checkup. However, his brother, fearing police reprisals, committed suicide. The commission observed that the police had fabricated documents and beaten Rajesh.

“Though their statements were filed, both the police officers refused to appear before the commission,” the commission noted in a press statement. Departmental action has been recommended against them.
