Council to have new building

The state government is planning to construct a new building for the Legislative Council near the old Assembly building. The Council at present is housed in Jubilee Hall.

The new building will have common hall for holding a joint session of the Assembly and the Council to be addressed by the governor, a car park and a library building.

Assembly speaker N Manohar, Council chairman B Chakrapani, roads and buildings minister D Prasada Rao and officials discussed the proposal at a meeting here on Friday. They also examined the land availability, its utilisation and the method of removing the existing structures without damaging the heritage qualities of the main buildings.

According to officials, as the Assembly as it is located in the Jubilee Hall and is therefore inconvenient for the governor, chief minister and other ministers, hence the decision to construct a huge common hall near the Assembly building. They also identified parking problem as there is no exclusive parking lot for ministers, MLAs and MLCs.

There is no building exclusively for the library, and the chambers for chairmen of various committees. The blueprint of the building plan will be prepared very soon. Officials identified about 3 acres of horticulture dept’s land behind the Assembly building and are planning to acquire the land for construction of the new building.
