New Delhi: As the Uttar Pradesh elections close in, parties have started announcing their candidates.
Congress released its first list of 46 candidates on Thursday for the first phase of the Assembly polls, which is scheduled for April 7.
The party nominated Ajay Yadav to take on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav from Bharthana Assembly constituency in Etawah district.
The name of Ajay Yadav, a prominent party leader from the region, figures in the list of 46 Congress candidates released by the AICC on Thursday night for the first phase of Assembly elections.
Mulayam Singh Yadav has decided to contest from two Assembly constituencies — Bharthana and Gaunnaur.
The other prominent Congress candidates in the list included Ganesh Dixit (Kanpur City), Auraiya (Sridhar Pandey), Rakesh Khera (Lalitpur), Shankar Lal Batham (Mainpuri), Subhash Yadav (Nidhauli Kalan) and Ch Udaibhan Singh (Fatehpur Sikri).
The Congress list of candidates for the first phase came on a day when V P Singh-led Jan Morcha also announced its candidates for 193 constituencies.
The lists came even as seat-sharing talks between Jan Morcha, Congress and the RLD have remained inconclusive.
Jan Morcha, on the other hand, announced electoral alliance with a number of smaller parties. The alliance includes CPI, Lok Janashakti Party, Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, Rashtravadi Communist Party and the United Democratic Front led by Yaqoob Qureshi.
