London: Insisting that Commonwealth Games went to New Delhi "for absolutely the right reasons," Chairman of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Sebastian Coe, has said the Indian capital must be allowed to host next year's event despite concerns over security.
"This is the world all big events live in. This was always going to be a challenge for India to organise... The Commonwealth Games went to New Delhi for absolutely the right reasons," Coe said.
This year's edition of the Indian Premier League is being moved out of the country after it dates clashed with the General Election and the Indian government said security forces needed to be focused on the poll exercise.
The decision raised security concerns for the next year's sporting event.
However, Coe said if these events are to be globalised leading sports bodies will have to help nations like India.
"It's an extraordinary opportunity in an extraordinary country," said Coe, who vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
"I know the Commonwealth Games Federation are down there on a permanent basis and I am sure the event will be a huge success, there is no doubt about that," Coe, whose mother was a half-Indian, told UK-based insidethegames.com. in Berlin, where he attended the IAAF Council meeting this weekend.
