Committee okays change in Article 371

Cabinet sub-committee on political affairs of the Centre which met at New Delhi on Friday approved a draft of the amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution for Hyderabad-Karnataka region comprising of Bidar, Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Bellary districts said former chief minister Dharam Singh who is also the Bidar MP. Now, it would come before the Monsoon Session of the House as a Bill, he said.

Move Welcomed

In two different statements issued in Bangalore External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Dr G Parameshwar welcomed the decision.

Krishna said: “The move would help to remove regional imbalance in terms of socio and economic development of the people of the region.”

Parameshwar said the decision would help provide better opportunities to the people living in the region when they seek admissions into professional courses and government jobs. He also urged Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to extend all co-operation to the Centre on the issue.
