BHUBANESWAR: An intense cold wave gripped the State leaving two persons reportedly dead in Boudh district. While night temperature plunged to near-zero level in parts of Boudh and Kandhamal districts, large parts of coastal Odisha had also the first experience of biting cold conditions. The State Capital recorded 13.5 degree Celsius on Monday, the lowest for the City this season. The temperature was two degrees below normal. Among districts, mercury read 5.8 degree Celsius in Kandhamal although remote pockets recorded even colder conditions. Besides, light to moderate fog was witnessed in Angul, Koraput, Malakangiri and Kandhamal districts. The India Meteorological Department said cold wave is likely to prevail over some parts of interior Odisha during the next 24 hours. Western and northern districts such as Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar were particularly at the receiving end with at least seven centres recording sub-10 degree Celsius temperature. Coastal pockets were not spared either. Balasore recorded 9.6 degree Celsius, four degree below normal. In Boudh’s Harbhanga, the cold conditions claimed two lives though the district administration is yet to confirm the deaths.
