TRIPUNITHURA: Captain Kerala Varma, the first Army man from the Kochi royal family, who was expelled from Indian Military Services in 1949 for his alleged links with the INA and Communist intellects, had pleaded to give him at least Rs 1 as compensation for his broken military service. Though he had fought for the rest of his life to get justice from the military wing they had turned a blind eye to him. However, the Indian Military honoured him with a fitting tribute on Saturday, when the Captain’s cremation took place at the Kochi royal crematorium. Three Armymen, representing the 16 Battalion of Madras Regiment, visited Kamalalayam Palace, Kerala Varma’s ancestral house, on Saturday morning and paid due respects to the mortal remains of Captain Thampuran. The Armymen headed by Subaidar Umapathy visited his ancestral house. After giving a formal salute to the Captain’s body, Umapathy placed a wreath to honour Varma. While the mortal remains where taken to the crematorium Kochi royal family, Havildar Satheesh Babu and Naik B P Rai carried the body of Varma, along with his grandchildren Venugopal Varma and Ajith Varma. The Armymen also spent a few minutes with the children and grandchildren of Kerala Varma.“This will certainly be an honour for Captain Thampuran as he wished to die as an Indian soldier, the family members of Varma said.
