KOCHI: Large developments give way to bigger and sophisticated towns. However, in the process, smaller and essential equipment that had once been a part of daily life tend to fade as a part of the forgotten times.Same is the case of the lone temperature reader located just opposite the Marine Drive rainbow bridge. The temperature reader proudly emanated the readings of Kochi city until two years back. At present, the two metre long temperature reader is just a sad sight. With climbers growing on its sides and the weight of the temperature reader on wobbly legs of the stand, it has ceased to exist.For the locals, who had witnessed its use in the past years, it is nostalgic.“It may not have been an essential component, but it was nice to know the temperature at any given time of the day,” said S Shaji, an automobile workshop employee at Marine drive.The temperature reader was set up by GAIL some five years back. Now, the authorities say that the defunct reader cannot be used anymore.GAIL Deputy General Manager Ramesh said, “In times like these, where LCD displays have become a common catch word, something like a temperature reader proves to be useless. At present, there has been no proposal for a new one to replace the broken one.”
