Despite problems of law and order and forest clearance in the field of exploration, the Central Mine Planning ~~amp;amp; Design Institute Limited (CMPDI) has recorded an all time high drilling of 6.98 lakh metre during fiscal 2013/14.
The overall growth was very significant and it could have crossed the nine lakh mark had there not been law and order and forest clearance problems, the public sector's Chairman-cum-Managing Director AK Debnath told reporters in Ranchi.
The twin problems were seen in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said, adding this affected coal production of 10-15 million tonnes.
While exploratory drilling was carried out in hundred blocks across 21 coalfields in six states, promotional drillings was also carried out as well in 22 blocks across eleven coalfields in seven states, Debnath said.
The CMPDI and its agencies prepared 15 geological reports establishing three billion tonne coal resources in the "proved category", besides ten geological reports under promotional exploration.
"The CMPDI continued its untiring and pioneering efforts for facilitating commercial development of coal based non-conventional energy resources and is pursuing commercial and R~~amp;amp;D projects with national/international organisations, he said.
He said CMPDI is also adding up to its existing lab capability, which can now not only undertake resource evaluation but can also take up studies related to producing of CBM (coalbed methane) and shale gas, he said.
Stating that the commercial production of CBM gas was expected to start within three years, Debnath said two CIL-ONGC collaborative projects for commercial development of CBM in Jharia and Raniganj Block had entered into crucial development phase after completion of exploratory and pilot phases.
